Basically if you want to know if I think you'd like the game or not, it comes down to this:
If you liked any of the megaten games that came before persona 3, I think you'll like Strange Journey. If you liked P3 and P4's gameplay but not P1 or P2, I don't think you'll like Strange Journey. If you HATE the 1st person POV thing that the older games had (soul hackers, persona, etc), then uhhh I duno, Strange Journey is 1st person too but it doesn't make you seasick like the older games!! *pukes guts out at devil summoner*
It is really nostalgic and refreshing to see a new release from Atlus that needs you to negotiate with asshole demonsthat just want to steal your money to get them to join your party and to combine the old 1-st person PoV thing with newer battle and gaming systems. I like a lot of the new systems that are like cool recycled versions of other aspects of other smt games. FUN
I really like the battle system but it is rather difficult to work with if your team is unmatched--and by this I mean your stance. The game identifies each character/nakama by stance, if their name is in red, Chaos, in blue, Law, and white, Neutral. In your party, if one character strikes the enemy's weakpoint, all other party members of the same stance will follow up with an attack. This means that your stance directly influences the gameplay and can be frustrating if you have like, 1 law, 1 neutral, and 2 chaos members in the same party but the two chaos members don't hit a weakpoint. But vice versa... if your party is all in the same stance, it makes battles go by very very quickly! So far I've found this very enjoyable and frustratingly fun.
I also like that first encounters are always mystery blobs and you have to identify the monsters only after you defeat them. This means GUESSING WEAKPOINTS GUESSING WEAKPOINTS but w/e it's fun ok. Fun and torturous.
I think what I like most of all so far is that the once in a while some of the scenarios and dungeons will creep me out--writings on the floor that warn you about things, really creepy descriptions of mangled corpses that have been tortured by other demons, and like the weird epic choir music that is the BGM. The third dungeon is an empty but brand-new looking shopping mall and that in itself is kind of freaky.
I'm only on the 3rd dungeon so far but what's freaked me out the most thus far is (spoiler I guess, highlight to see:) in the 2nd dungeon, one team member will randomly say, 'what's that laughter? is that you, *characername*? why are you laughing?!' then later 'it's you isn't it.... you're the one that's laughing...' and he gets more and more insane and eventually you have to kill him and it gave me the chills OTL.
I don't know when this will come out in English (March?) but I hope you guys all give it a chance, I'm really really enjoying it so far 8D
